The VSCA State Office, the Officer Schools and Region Representative Schools, and the entire Advisory Committee are excited to invite your school to attend the

95th annual VSCA Convention!

March 25-26, 2022

at Orange County High School

Because of the uncertain nature of the pandemic and the difficulty in projecting what conditions will be in late March, we have modified the structure of our convention for this year. Many districts are not allowing overnight travel, yet we were reluctant to hold another completely virtual convention. So we have created a hybrid event, with a virtual kickoff on Friday evening followed by a jam-packed day of in-person activity on Saturday. We’ve selected a central location to make it driveable for everyone and are hopeful that many schools will be able to attend.

With all the challenges brought about by the pandemic, many schools are struggling to create or maintain a positive school climate in which students and staff feel a sense of community. Behavior issues, stress, mental health needs, and other problems leave many school leaders wondering how to rebuild their school culture. Student leaders and their advisers have an important role to play in addressing these concerns.

VSCA is excited to announce that our annual convention this March will feature a special session for all delegates focused on building a positive school culture that includes everyone. The session will be facilitated by Phil Boyte, author of the book School Culture By Design, creator of such programs as Link Crew, WEB, and Breaking Down the Walls, and founder of Learning for Living. Check out Phil’s approach to working with school leaders here.

Convention might look a bit different this year than previous years, but the same spirit of sharing, collaboration, and fun is still here. The officers and Advisory Committee members are working hard to create an exciting leadership event designed to enable members to share ideas, network, and build stronger leadership skills to take back to their home schools. Use the information in this guide to help you begin planning to send a team of student council members, class officers, and supportive faculty members for an amazing experience full of learning with hundreds of the best student leaders and their advisers from across the Commonwealth.

This unique convention experience will prepare your student leaders and their advisers to begin creating an inclusive culture where students say: I belong here. I am safe here, I can learn and grow here.

Carrying on VSCA Traditions

It's been a while since we were in person at convention, so here is information about two VSCA traditions we don't want to lose.

Fringies: How to make them

Friendly Fringies are a tradition at VSCA that provide an easy way to break the ice when meeting someone new. We'll modify the practice this year to keep everyone safer and use fist or elbow bumps instead of hugs, but you'll still get to swap fringies. Check out this video for how to make them.

School Explosion: How to create one

School explosions are a way to introduce your delegation to the other schools at convention. Make up a short 30-second cheer or chant and be ready to explode with energy during the opening general session.
