The State Convention is the highlight of our year!
The annual Convention is the highlight of our association year, with keynote speakers, breakout sessions called Learning Labs, a pep rally, a session with the Virginia Board of Education, general sessions, officer elections, award presentations, and more!
Hundreds of student leaders and advisors from middle and high schools across the Commonwealth will gather at Massaponax High School for Saving the Day with Leadership, March 17-18, 2023 at the 96th annual VSCA Convention.

Leadership Development Day 2023
VSCA is excited to announce a new opportunity for student leaders to build stronger leadership skills
to more effectively lead their student councils. Open to all Advisory Committee members and
presidents of member schools, the Leadership Development Day offers a chance to participate in
leadership training and have some fun while networking with peers from across the Commonwealth.
▪ Friday, July 7, 2023 at Courtland High School
▪ Open to all Advisory Committee members & member school presidents
▪ Cost: $25/person
▪ Lunch and snacks will be provided
▪ Special event: tie-dye a unique VSCA t-shirt
▪ Check-in starts at 9:00am and the program begins at 9:30am. We will finish by 3:00pm
Topics to be covered:
● Why student council? What’s our purpose?
● Goal setting: both personal and for groups
● Meeting management: how to keep meetings moving and engaging
● Spirit week theme development: how to tie all the elements of HoCo together with an effective
theme and engage more students in the activities
● State service project: making an impact across the state with a powerful service project

Region 1: REGISTRATION MATERIALS MUST BE POSTMARKED by October 24
Region 2: REGISTRATION MATERIALS MUST BE POSTMARKED by October 17 -- deadline extended to October 24.
Region 3: REGISTRATION MATERIALS MUST BE POSTMARKED by November 7
Region 4: REGISTRATION MATERIALS MUST BE POSTMARKED by October 24
Region 5–8: REGISTRATION MATERIALS MUST BE POSTMARKED by October 24
VSCA Regional Workshops
Are you looking for training close to home? Our Regional Workshops are held across Virginia in the late fall and early winter. These affordable workshops are hosted by the elected Regional Representative schools so are within driving distance of member schools. And the low cost of $15/person means you can afford to bring your whole council! Not sure in which region your school is located? Check the region map here. Member schools are also welcome to attend a workshop in a region other than their own if a date or location is more preferable.
Dates for the 2022-23 school year are:
- Region 1: November 5 hosted by Mechanicsville HS
- Region 2: October 29 hosted by Hickory HS
- Region 3: November 19 hosted by Massaponax High School, 10:00am - 2:00 pm
- Region 4: November 5 at Freedom HS
- Regions 5-6-7-8: November 5 at Liberty HS, 10:00am - 2:00 pm

Advisory Committee Meetings
This year's Advisory Committee will hold meetings on three Saturdays in 2022-23:
September 17, 2022 10:00-2:00 at Massaponax High School
November 12, 2022 10:00-2:00 at Mechanicsville High School
February 4, 2023 10:00-2:00 at Massaponax High School

Member-only Webinars
Training webinars are available for VSCA member schools and advisers throughout the year on a variety of topics. Stay tuned for information on the webinar schedule for the 2022-23 school year There is NO CHARGE for these webinars, but advance registration is required.
SCA Advisors' Workshop
SCA advisors will learn how to support student leaders through group goal-setting, effective project planning and implementation, reflection on lessons learned and building a stronger team with recognition and appreciation. These workshops have been suspended because of the pandemic; VSCA hopes to restart them during the 2022-23 school year.
